Censorship is so Web 1.0According to Max Kelly, chief security officer at Facebook, last week’s attacks on its service and Twitter, LiveJournal, Blogger and YouTube were attempts to keep the voice of Georgian blogger “Cyxymu” (a.k.a. Georgy) from being heard.

So what was Georgy saying? LiveJournal user zeblue has alredy made what he calls a “translated recreation” of (the front page) of Cyxymu’s blog

Surprisingly, @cyxymu hasn’t been very active on Twitter, so I reversed his tweets and ran them through Google Translate to create this mostly-English translation, ordered by date, with the oldest entry at the top. Since Cyxymu’s LiveJournal site is down, I’ve modified links to specific entries so that they bring you to translated versions of those entries, courtesy of Google’s cached pages.

It looks like Evgeny Morozov was right:

If you carefully look at CYXYMU’s Twitter account (most of it in Russian), you will see that there is really no information of ANY political significance there. He’s been tweeting since late December 2008, produced 41 updates, and most of them had nothing to do with politics (here are some typical updates: “Summer is good!”, “Life is great! I am recalling all the jokes about mothers-in-law”, “Oh those bureaucrats”).

For more about the Cyxymu and “the absence of strong and public commitments to defending freedom of expression” make sure to read Morozov’s article, “Is CYXYMU the first ‘digital refugee’?

So what do you think? Why was Cyxymu targeted?
