Journalism links
Hello there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed.
These are links to select web pages recently bookmarked by members of my delicious.com network — and some opportunities inspired by those pages:
- Times Extra: The New York Times Opens Web Front Page to Outside Content [ReadWriteWeb] (from yeltsinfina) – Yesterday, the “Gray Lady” launched Times Extra, a version of their front page that includes includes links to other blogs and news sites. Opportunity: Explain to your boss why this is a good idea that your organization should adopt.
- The NYTs goes hybrid, but still doesn’t get it. [Andrew Golis] (from paulb) - Golis says Times Extra’s auto-generated links “neither augment the core story with new information nor gel with the editorial direction of the headline itself” and editors should handle “outside content” instead. Opportunity: Hone your skills by creating alternate versions of Times Extra packages.
- New journalists for new information flows [Online Journalism Blog] (from dan_10v11) – Paul Bradshaw describes six roles based on three types of information that journalists will need to handle “in a networked environment.” Five of the roles would deal directly RSS feeds. Opportunity: Learn to use RSS efficiently to read and distribute information.
- 12 ways to find the best in data visualization [10,000 Words] (from earleyedition) – Mark S. Luckie lets screenshots, instead of explanatory text, provide context when he links to 12 sites about visualization. Opportunity: Provide context in a form that works best for the content.
- Mumbai, Twitter, BBC and unverified info (from paulb) - Editor Steve Herrmann looks at the BBC’s recent live coverage of the Mumbai attacks. They will continue to “select, link and label the emerging information. Further assessment, equipped with this information, is left to you.” Opportunity: Learn the tools used by the BBC; provide similar coverage for a live event.
- Neighborhood Watch Puts Florida Home Sales on the Map [MediaShift] (from reinventing) - Matt Waite explains the creation of the St. Petersburg Times tool that uses housing data to generate an “instant story for each neighborhood.” Opportunity: Follow this model to turn data you have into stories.
